What are Bed Bugs and Their History?
Bed bugs are one of the most bothersome human parasites. They have been in existence for thousands of years. They infest human habitats and bite humans to feed on the blood. The preferred habitat for bed bugs is inside buildings, more specifically, near the bed or sleeping areas of humans.
Though bed bugs are most active during the night, they are not nocturnal and can feed on the hosts any time of the day. They feed on the blood without getting noticed by the host as the bite of the bug is painless. They bite on exposed parts of the human body like arms, neck, face, etc.
What specifically do bed bugs look like?
Adult bed bugs are flat, oval-shaped insects with light brown or reddish-brown appearance. The adult bugs have vestigial front wings and hind wings are completely lacking. The abdomen of the insect is segmented and the hairs present on them gives a banded appearance. Adults are usually 4 to 5 mm long and 1.5 to 3mm wide.
The newly hatched bed bugs or the nymphs are lighter in color. When they have consumed the blood, the color will be bright red. A few hours after feeding the blood the color will become brown and within two days the color changes to opaque black as the blood get digested. When Nymph molt attains maturity, the color becomes browner. There are different species of bed bugs and their lifespan is dependent on their variety and their feed availability.
Bed Bug Feeding Habits
Bed bugs are hematophagous, or bloodsucking in nature. They prefer to feed on human blood when other animals are not available. They identify their host by the carbon dioxide emitted by the body, the warmth and by the chemicals released from the hosts.
During warm conditions, bed bugs need to feed in every 5 to 10 days, but they can survive without feed for more than five months and in cool conditions, they can go without feed for about one year.
The mouthparts of bed bugs are suitable to tear the skin. The saliva of the bedbugs contains anticoagulants and painkillers which help them to feed on blood without blood getting clotted and also without causing pain to the host.
Bed bug bites can cause adverse health effects such as skin rashes, itching, allergy etc. Though they do not transmit diseases, but it is necessary to get rid of bed bugs to avoid skin manifestations. There are bed bug extermination experts who will be able to help you to get rid of the problem.
